The wild facts of sex

Well all do it, but how much do we actually know about the names, traditions and myths surrounding making love?
Here are 20 of the most fascinating, bizarre sexual titbits...
Losing it

According to the 2005 Durex Sex Survey, the average age for first time sex around the globe is 17.3 years. In Au it's 16.8 years, while in India, they lose it at 19.8 years on average.

Time
When you're lost in the moment, it can seem that your hot sex session may last for hours. In reality, however, the average sex action lasts for around 15 minutes.

Fetishes

Some of the more unusual sexual fetishes have equally unusual names. Acrotomophilia is a sexual attraction to amputees, while agalmatophilia is a sexual fondness for statues or mannequins.
Frequency

Globally, most people have sex 103 times per year. In Au, we're doing it 108 times per year. Meanwhile in Japan, it seems they have other things on their mind, having sex only 45 times on average per year.

Masturbation

Will not make you go blind, as previously thought, which is a good thing for the 80 per cent of females and 94 per cent of males who admit to a bit of self-pleasure. Erections

Male foetuses are capable of having an erection during the last trimester of pregnancy. At the other end of the life cycle, 75 per cent of men in their 70s are still potent.

The Big O

The highest recorded number of orgasms in one hour? I'm glad you asked... 134 for a female (sounds painful, actually -- Ed) and 16 for a male, according to the Centre for Marital and Sexual Studies in Long Beach, California.

Ancient Cures

The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that ingesting the semen of certain animals could cure male impotency. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, practitioners of the Karma Sutra turned to a potent mixture of camel's milk and honey to assist with maintaining erection.

Early Contraception

The first condom, a linen sheath tied to the penis with a red ribbon, appeared in Italy in 1564. Animal intestine versions were adopted through the ages, and the more familiar rubber version arrived on the scene along with the invention of vulcanised rubber in 1843.

Flings

The most common sexual experience reported by Australians in the Durex Sex Survey was the humble one-night stand. Sixty per cent of us Aussies confessed to a bit of root scootin' compared to the global rate of 44 per cent.

Size: Him

The largest penis recorded by Dr Alfred Kinsey in his landmark sex study is a whopping 25 centimetres long when erect. The smallest measured a meagre 2.5 centimetres long when flaccid.

Size: Her

Just like an iceberg, three-quarters of the clitoris is found under the surface, where a complex network of nerves is busily at work. The shaft and glans (yes, they have the same names as their male counterparts) can measure between two-to-four centimetres in length.

Testicles

Testicles can swell by a massive 50 per cent when a man is aroused. And, in case you were wondering, the left testicle usually hangs lower than the right for right-handed men. And visa versa.

Self-serve

Not just an urban myth, 0.3 per cent of the male population are flexible and, shall we say, well endowed enough to be able to give themselves a blowjob. And around one per cent of the female population can orgasm just by stimulating their own nipples.

Semen

Whether you spit or swallow, I'm sure you'll be intrigued to learn that there are between five and 20 calories in a teaspoon of semen -- which is, incidentally, about as much as a man produces when he ejaculates.

What's In It?

Semen contains small amounts of more than 30 elements, including fructose, ascorbic acid, citric acid, lactic acid, nitrogen, vitamin B12, and enzymes. Yummy. Speed

The initial spurt of semen travels at Olympian speeds -- clocking in at 45 kilometres per hour. Once it's out of the, er, gun, a sperm travels at the rate of 18 centimetres per hour.

The Fear

Medomalacuphobia isn't just a mouthful, it's also the fear of losing an erection; and on the other side of the spectrum, we have ithyphallophobia, which is the fear of having an erection or even thinking about one.
